Last school year the children at Yoxall St Peter’s School were challenged to ride, cycle or scoot as many miles as they could over a 2-week period, and a group of parents to attempted to beat by cycling the total miles achieved by all the school children at the Grand Finale held on 21st June 2019 at Curborough Sprint Course. The children achieved a fantastic 4,663 miles in the two weeks which was a tall order for the volunteered 21 parent cyclists to beat in 10 hours. So, to be fair and still set a meaningful challenge the adults target to beat was set at 1000 miles in 10 hours on 21st June. It was very close towards the end of the day but with a last big push the 21 adults managed to achieve 1,013 miles.
A fantastic day was had by everyone; the children enjoyed their visit to the track to learn more about cycling and cheer on the adult riders doing the endurance challenge. At the end of the day, once the endurance ride had finished the children had great fun whizzing around the track on their bicycles. With both child and adult sponsorship, a celebratory BBQ and a fantastic raffle we were extremely proud to have raised £4,075 funds for the renovation of our school library.
We were fortunate that an army of volunteers who helped to redecorate the library at the DIY SOS on 8th February 2020. Cleaning, painting, fixing shelves, painting, moving furniture and even more painting filled up the day. The library was starting to transform!
Fast forward to Tuesday 29th September 2020, after a very enjoyable day the school library is now open for the children to borrow books. The library was opened by local children’s author Ben Davis. The children enjoyed taking part in the opening and making seed paper, from recycled books, to plant next summer.
FOSPS have invested in a number of new and up to date books and also have at least 1 copy of each of the books on the 100 books list. All books have been put into categories and suggested reading levels (KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2), there is also a search facility. Each book has been added to the new library system and this library book catalogue can be accessed from any tablet, computer, mac etc. at any time, any where (as long as you have an internet connection).
Thank you to all involved for giving our children these precious memories and a space to read and relax, the children love it!
